The Evergreens Housewives Market was established in 1985 at the Springs Fresh Produce market by a housewife for the housewives of South Africa.
Mrs Liza Pereira's vast experience on the Klerksdorp Fresh Produce Market dealing with farmers on a daily basis and her involvement in JP Transport (Transport of Fresh Produce nationwide), decided her to start Evergreens Housewives Market as a gateway to Fresh Produce for the consumer.
The mission of Evergreens Housewives Market was, and still is, to establish a consumer friendly environment where the broader population can do their shopping with the emphasis on the senses - see, feel, hear, taste, and smell.
The concept was a tremendous success, to the extent that Mrs Pereira's three sons, John, Jimmy and Jerome, became part of the management team.
An opportunity arose in 1994 for Evergreens Housewives Market to set up in Pretoria. As in Springs, the business grew from a 300m2 store to a unique shopping facility of over 3 000m2. Having outgrown this store, Evergreens recently opened their new 6 000mē store at the Tshwane Fresh Produce Market and it is one of the largest fresh produce stores in Southern Africa.
Evergreens approached Tony Saunderson Productions (TSP) to advise them on a suitable sound system for the new store. TSP immediately contacted Tadco (Pty) Ltd to supply and install the system to their specifications.
As the new store was going to run twelve hours per day, six days a week, Tadco decided to use Australian Monitor Installation Series equipment almost exclusively. "The proven reliability and ease of use made Australian Monitor the natural choice," said Tadco's Philip Kruger, "Installing it is a breeze and the Digipage system offers all the flexibility Evergreens will require."
The heart of the system is the Australian Monitor Installation Series (AMIS) DigiPage multizone paging and source selection system. This provides selectable zone paging to any one or any combination of the five current zones: Main Store Area, Wine Cellar, Stoep, Offices and Warehouse.
The Main Store Area is covered by 20 AMIS Install 30 loudspeakers driven by a single AMIS 250P 100 Volt amplifier. The Offices are supplied with seven AMIS QuickFit QF5 ceiling mounted loudspeakers with three AMIS MH30 horn loudspeakers servicing the Warehouse. The Stoep has six Install 30s and the Wine Cellar two. A total of four AMIS 120P and two AMIS 250P power amplifiers were used in the installation.
One DigiPage 8M Paging Station each in the Offices and central booth overlooking the store provides paging points. The main office is also equipped with a DigiPage DPRM Remote Wall Station for local selection of background music and control of the volume in the Offices.
Two sound sources, a CD player and FM tuner provides each zone with a choice of background music.
A completely separate sound system was installed for the Cooking Demonstration area consisting of an AMIS 250P power amplifier driving four Quest MS801 speakers to cover the area directly in front of the demonstrations. An AMIS TX8000 mixer provides control for an Audio-Technica ATW-1451/HC1 head worn radio microphone and Audio-Technica ATR50 cable mic. A DigiPage DPRM Remote Wall Panel was also fitted to the rack to provide local control over the Main Store background music level and source selection.
